Cholesterol is made by cells throughout the body, mostly in the liver, from acetate. Acetate is a two-carbon compound resulting from the breakdown of sugars and fats. There’s a common falsehood that your level rises when eating cholesterol . The truth is what causes your level to rise is eating more starch, sugar, and any fat in excess of need. Some 75% of it comes from eating starch, sugar, and excess fat rather than from eating more of it per se.

Other factors that cause it to rise, besides sugar, refined starch, and fat, are the vitamins and minerals in your diet, whether you’re getting enough fiber and exercise, and what your stress levels are. Genetics also play a part.

Neptune krill oil’s effect on high cholesterol was the second major study done by the University of Montreal, McGill University, and Riverview Medical Center in Montreal. Researchers assessed the effects of the oil on hyperlipidemia (higher than normal levels of fat and cholesterol in the blood). They specifically looked at changes in levels of total cholesterol, LDL, and HDL over three months of krill oil use.

The study showed that Neptune krill oil significantly reduced total cholesterol, LDL, and triglycerides, and increased HDL levels.

• Reduction of triglycerides – 11%

• Increase of HDL (good) – 44%

The Study

1000mg to 1500 mg of Neptune krill oil daily was significantly more successful at lowering LDL and triglyceride levels than was a dose of fish oil two to three times greater – 3000 mg daily.

The theory is that the unique molecular structure of Neptune krill oil, with its abundance of phospholipids and antioxidants like astaxanthin, is what makes it superior at regulating levels of fats in the blood.
