Essential oils for constipation….. What is constipation? According to Funk and Wagnalls Standard Dictionary constipation is: A condition of the bowels characterized by suppressed or difficult evacuation.

This disorder is infrequent passage of bowel movements. A person with constipation often or always has hard stools that may be hard to pass. Sometimes there is a feeling of the rectum not being completely emptied.

If the person strains during a bowel movement, this can cause abdominal pain. In some people the pain may persist between movements. Constipation can cause nausea and curb appetite.

The stool in the last part of the large intestine and the rectum may harden and block the flow from higher in the intestine. This is fecal impaction. This condition sometimes develops in people with severe constipation. This can lead to cramps and rectal pain. Often watery mucus oozes around the blockage. A person my sometimes incorrectly conclude that they have diarrhea when in fact constipation is the problem.

Constipation may be caused by:

• slowing of the stool transit through the large intestine by disease or certain drugs
• dehydration
• low-fiber diet
• pain
• psychological conditions such as depression
• unknown origin
