Using essential oils for pets can be a big advantage for them…..for their health. These oils can also help save on vet bills.

For those of you who have pets that are important members of your family essential oils can be a useful addition to your pets care. We are animal lovers and have 3 dogs, 6 cats, and a rabbit. We have had more rabbits, a black bear hamster and rat in the past too.

Dogs & Essential Oils

Dogs have a good instinct for essential oils. A minimum amount of oil is necessary because dogs are thought to have 200 million olfactory receptors…..perhaps twenty times what we have. What is pretty amazing is how a dog can distinguish between two oils and know which one is good for him. Say a dog has an upset stomach. If you put oil for digestion on one hand and oil for fleas on another hand the dog will always lick the hand with the digestive oil.

Fleas and Ticks

A good way to discourage fleas, ticks and other parasites is add essential oils to dog shampoo. Add 1 drop of either citronella or lemongrass oil to the shampoo. Large dogs like Great Danes need 2 drops of oil. It also gives them a nice fresh smell.

Colds, Flu and Cough

Dogs can suffer from colds, flu and cough the same as we do. The best essential oils for these ailments are tea tree, naouli, or eucalyptus. There are two methods of applying these oils. One works better on short hair dogs and the other on long hair. In either case not much oil is needed because of the dog’s higher sense of smell. Don’t use too much!

In both methods apply the rub over the chest, all around the rib cage, around the throat, and in direct line from the ears to the shoulders.

Oil-based – This method works for short hair dogs. Add 2 drops of tea tree, naouli, or eucalyptus oil to 2 tablespoonsful of vegetable oil like sweet almond or peanut.

Water-based – This method works better for long hair dogs. Add 2 drops of oil to 1 teaspoonful of alcohol (vodka, brandy, etc) and then add this to 6 teaspoonsful of water.

Apply both methods twice a day for three days. If the dog is very sick, eucalyptus oil can be applied neat (pure) to the mentioned areas for only a few days.

Arthritis in Dogs

Dogs can suffer from arthritis the same as us. I know my dogs enjoy a massage so this is a great way to help his sore joints. Be careful though and don’t be too rough. Try to get through the coat to the skin. To 2 tablespoonsful of vegetable oil add:

• 3 drops ginger essential oil
• 2 drops lavender essential oil
• 4 drops rosemary essential oil

Toothpaste & Breath Deodorizer

• 2 tablespoonsful baking soda
• 1 drop clove essential oil

Bad Breath Caused by Stomach Problems

If your dog has bad breath that is not caused by his teeth this indicates a stomach problem. Peppermint oil works great for this. Rub a drop of neat (pure) oil in a line from beneath the ears and into the shoulders.

Cats & Essential Oils

I think cats are the coolest animals. I had my first family of cats 25 years ago....4 of them. They passed on and I was only going to replace them with one...Finnegan from the Humane Society. I soon had taken in 3 more.

Every cat has their own unique personality. They can be the cutest and the most affectionate. However, they have some attributes that can be very aggravating to say the least. I guess you have to be a cat lover to put up with these habits. One of them is scratching on the furniture, (or logs in our house).

Finnegan

They are doing this to help shed their nails and making way for new ones and for marking an area with pheromones. One way to give your cat an alternate scratching area is to take a piece of old wood and apply some valerian essential oil on it. Cats are sent into the ecstasy by this oil. They also adore cat mint and catnip.

Phoebe

Essential oils can be used to make a flea collar that works wonderfully. Flea collars that you buy commercially contain toxic chemicals that can be absorbed through your pet’s skin and your own.

Soak a soft material collar in the following mixture:

• 1/2 teaspoonful of alcohol
• 1 drop Cedarwood
• 1 drop Lavender
• 1 drop Citronella
• 1 drop Thyme
Mix this with 4 garlic capsules (make a hole with a needle or pin and squeeze out the contents). Pour this on the collar and let it dry before putting it on the cat’s neck. It should last one month.

Malachy

I personally would not use this method on an outdoor cat because he could get hung up on the collar. That is also one of the bad things about the commercial flea collars in addition to the chemicals.

We had a little cat show up at our house with one of those white collars on and she evidently was lost or dropped off, because the collar had been on her for awhile and was way too small because she had grown out of it. That is a sad thing to see a collar growing into a helpless animal.

Rabbits & Essential Oils

Rabbits in captivity have to put up with urine-soaked straw under their feet. Urine and feces that is allowed to rot can cause the growth of bacteria. Clean the cage out regularly and place dried herbs in the bottom to stop maggots from breeding.

Myxomatosis is spread by flies. It’s a disease that affects rabbits. It’s caused by the myxoma virus. In the late 1800’s, it was first observed in Uruguay. It was introduced into Australia in 1950 in an attempt to control the rabbit population. After WWII, it was introduced into the UK in an attempt to reduce the rabbit population there. So this is another reason to prevent flies and maggots in the rabbit’s cage.

Colds and sniffles can affects rabbits too. You can rub tea tree, peppermint, or eucalyptus on their fur.....chest and back. Wash the cage out with water in which tea tree oil or eucalyptus oil has been added. This also helps with fleas.

Hamsters & Essential Oils

Clean out the hamster cage with essential oils, the same as with rabbits. Hamsters like the smell of lavender. This will keep the hamster healthy as lavender is antiseptic and an antibiotic. Add 2 drops of lavender to 2 quarts of water and swish it around the cage after you have cleaned it.

Hamsters store their food so it can rot. Use dried herbs and essential oils on the cage floor to prevent maggots.
