Essential Fatty Acids

A fatty acid is a carboxylic acid, an organic acid characterized by the presence of a carboxyl group, which is either saturated or unsaturated. Triglycerides are composed of fatty acids. Those fatty acids which your body can’t make from other nutrients are classified as “essential fatty acids”.You must get them from the food you eat.

There are two basic essential fatty acids: omega-3 (alpha-linolenic) and omega-6 (linoleic). Medium-chained fatty acids, like those found in coconut oil, are also important and are termed conditionally essential. Under certain circumstances they’re just as important as other fatty acids.

These Important Fatty Acids Are Found In Neptune Krill Oil

These acids are very important for your health. Being deficient in them may lead to disease. If you eat conventionally processed vegetable oils and hydrogenated oil you may be deficient. Why?

The essential fatty acids that are found in most vegetable oils are often damaged by refining and processing, or destroyed by free radicals. This makes these oils an inferior source of these acids. Also, trans-fatty acids from hydrogenated oils, such as margarine and shortening, block or interfere with your body’s use of them.

You can get these acids from the food you eat, unrefined cold-pressed vegetable oils, or dietary supplements such as Neptune krill oil. Coconut oil only has about 2 percent of these acids, but by adding coconut oil to your diet the medium-chain fatty acids work synergistically with them, improving the utilization of these fats. A diet rich in coconut oil can enhance the efficiency of them by as much as 100 percent. In addition, coconut oil acts as an antioxidant, protecting these acids from destructive oxidation inside the body.

The World Health Organization says you need to get about 3 percent of your daily calories from them. There’s no set amount of medium-chain fatty acids in your daily calories. We know that infants need about 5 to 10 percent medium-chain fatty acids in their daily calorie consumption. So it appears that you need to consume a small amount of essential fatty acids along with a considerably larger amount of medium-chain fatty acids.
