Oil Pulling

Oil pulling is a technique practiced in Ayurvedic medicine.

So what is oil pulling? It’s the rinsing and swishing of oil in the mouth to remove body toxins and harmful bacteria.

What kind of oil should you use? Sesame, sunflower or coconut oil can be used. You don’t need to look for an organic oil or cold pressed oil. Normal refined oil is fine. Dr. F. Karach, M.D. states that sesame and sunflower are the best. Dr. Bruce Fife uses coconut oil. I use sesame oil most of the time, but sometimes use coconut.

When I first heard about oil pulling I didn’t completely understand the process, until I had done some research on the subject. So what is the correct way to do it?

In the morning before you eat your breakfast (on an empty stomach) place one tablespoonful (15ml) of oil in your mouth. Don’t swallow it, but slowly move the oil in your mouth as rinsing and swishing – suck and pull the oil through your teeth for 15 to 20 minutes.

If you gag easily you may want to start out with a smaller amount of oil until you get used to the process.

After you are finished swishing the oil around it must be spit out (use the garbage so you don’t clog your sink). It has become toxic so don’t swallow it or you will put the toxins and harmful bacteria in your stomach. If you happen to swallow some don’t worry. It will pass out through the feces.

Thoroughly rinse and cleanse the mouth with tap water. Clean the sink because the rinsing contains harmful bacteria.

There seems to be quite a few explanations as to how oil pulling works.

• It sucks toxins out of the bloodstream through a vein under the tongue.
• The mouth absorbs essential fatty acids from the oil.
• It activates special detoxifying enzymes in the saliva.
• It activates the mouth enzymes which draw toxins out of the blood.
• It balances the body’s chakras or chi energy flow.
• It “pulls” disease-causing bacteria and their toxins out from around the teeth and gums.
