Shocking Russian Studies – Make the Right Oil Choice

I’ve written about how healthy coconut oil is in your diet, because of the medium-length fatty acids. Shocking Russian studies makes it imperative, I believe, that you make a good organic coconut oil your oil of choice. (Other oils you could use are olive and macadamia nut.)

Coconut oil has had a bad reputation over the years. Why is this? The tropical oil war has raged because of money, politics, and misunderstanding. Who is the victim? You and I, the consumer.

We have been repeatedly told that saturated fat is bad for us and that we must reduce our intake. So let me tell you again that, there is a difference between medium-chained saturated fatty acids in coconut oil and long-chain saturated fatty acids found in meat and other foods.

As far back as the 1950’s research began to show us the health benefits of coconut oil. So how did coconut oil become a villain to be avoided and vegetable oil like soybean become the “healthy” oil?

It began it the mid-1980’s and credit goes to the American Soybean Association. The media was in a frenzy warning people about the dangers of a newly discovered health threat-- tropical oils.

In response to the seemingly overwhelming public response there was a switch from tropical oil to soybean. Movie theaters made their popcorn with soybean oil rather than tropical oil. Food makers who had used tropical oil for years switched to soybean oil. Restaurants also made the switch to soybean and other vegetable oils.

Tragically, the oil that replaced coconut and palm oils was hydrogenated vegetable oil. The principal source is soybeans. This is the most damaging dietary oil in existence!

The entire campaign was a carefully orchestrated plan by the American Soybean Association. They capitalized on the public’s fear of saturated fat and the misconception of its association with heart disease. They set out to create a health crisis that would be so terrifying it would scare the public away from using tropical oils.

In 1986, the American Soybean Association sent out a “Fat Fighter Kit” to soybean farmers. They encouraged them to write the government and food industry protesting the encroachment of the “highly saturated tropical oils such as palm kernel and coconut.” They also encouraged the wives and families of some 400,000 soybean growers to lobby for the health benefits of soybean oil.

Well meaning but misguided health groups such as the Center for Science in the Public Interest and individuals such as Nebraska millionaire Phil Sokolof, a recovered heart attack patient and founder of the National Heart Savers Association jumped on the band wagon and launched advertisement campaigns. Before long everyone believed coconut oil caused heart disease.

Now that soybean oil is well established in the American diet what could be more terrifying than this? The answer is—soybeans are one of the eight genetically modified food crops. This list of eight crops is as follows:

1. Soy
2. Corn
3. Cottonseed (used in vegetable cooking oils)
4. Canola (canola oil)
5. Sugar from sugar beets
6. Hawaiian papaya
7. Some varieties of zucchini
8. Crookneck squash

Why should you be concerned about GMO’s? This brings us back to the studies out of Russia. You may have read where genetically modified foods may cause sterility in future generations. Now the latest research from Russia provides shocking confirmation of this potential.

This study was conducted by the Russian equivalent of the US National Association for Gene Security. Its findings were recently announced, but not yet published. The scientists used hamsters, which hadn’t been previously used in GM studies. The studies confirmed problems related to fertility, birth weight of offspring, and infant mortality.

The second-generation GM soy-fed hamsters had a five-fold higher infant mortality rate compared to the 5 percent normal death rate that was happening in the controls. If that’s not troubling enough, nearly all of the third-generation GMO babies were sterile as well as a high number of the animals exhibiting a rare phenomenon---hair growing in their mouths.

A study in 2005 by Dr. Irina Ermakova, one of the senior scientists with the Russian National Academy of Sciences, gives us comparable results using rats. She wanted to do further studies, but was told not to do anymore GM food studies, her documents were burned on her desk, and samples were stolen from her laboratory. One of her colleagues said, “Well maybe the GM soy will solve the overpopulation problem on earth,” trying to comfort her.

We have a much longer life span than rats and hamsters. We have not seen one full generation go by yet since the introduction of GM crops. Do we wait and see what happens after three generations or stop the gmo’s now?

Shocking Russian Studies ... So as consumers we need to band together and make a healthy choice in our shopping. Choose organic and non-gmo foods. If we make the choice not to buy these harmful products and demand healthy organic foods there will be no choice than to give us those foods. If we don’t stand up for our health there may not be a healthy future generation or any generation at all.
